Icenetwork.com releases initial world figure skating rankings of 2009-10 season

U.S. Figure Skating August 27, 2009

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Aug. 27, 2009) - All four of the No. 1-ranked skaters and/or teams at the end of last season return to the top spot in the initial icenetwork.com World Figure Skater Rankings for 2009-10.

World champion Yu-Na Kim (ladies), World silver medalist Patrick Chan (men), Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (pairs), and Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin (ice dancing) sit atop their respective disciplines at the outset of the 2009-10 campaign. The highest-ranked U.S. skaters in each discipline are Rachael Flatt (No. 7, ladies), World champion Evan Lysacek (No. 3, men), Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker (No. 9, pairs), and Meryl Davis and Charlie White (No. 3, ice dancing.

Ladies

Kim has a commanding lead of almost 1,000 points over second-ranked Mao Asada of Japan. World silver medalist Joannie Rochette of Canada is third, while Carolina Kostner of Italy and Laura Lepisto of Finland round out the top five. Three of the next four skaters in the rankings are Japanese, with reigning World bronze medalist Miki Ando in sixth, Yukari Nakano eighth and Fumie Suguri ninth, giving Japan four of the top nine ladies skaters in the world. Other Americans in the rankings include Caroline Zhang (10th), Alissa Czisny (11th), Kimmie Meissner (17th) and Ashley Wagner (18th).

Men

Though not as dominant as Kim, Chan claims the No. 1 position on account of his consistency, as he finished either first or second at five of his six competitions in 2008-09. World bronze medalist Brian Joubert of France is second, just ahead of Lysacek. Reigning Grand Prix Final and U.S. champion Jeremy Abbott sits fourth, while Japan's Takahiko Kozuka ranks fifth. The United States has six men's skaters in all in the rankings, including Johnny Weir (No. 7), Adam Rippon (14th), Brandon Mroz (16th) and Stephen Carriere (20th). After announcing his return to competition, Olympic silver medalist and two-time World champion Stéphane Lambiel of Switzerland enters the rankings at No. 17.

Pairs

Savchenko and Szolkowy are the unquestioned No. 1 pairs team in the world, as indicated by their almost 1,100-point lead over No. 2-ranked Qing Pang and Jian Tong of China. Just behind Pang and Tong is the Chinese team of Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang, who won their third World silver medal last season. A gap of more than 1,000 points separates them from fourth-ranked Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov of Russia, the 2009 World bronze medalists. Canada's Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison are fifth. The only other U.S. team in the rankings besides McLaughlin and Brubaker are Rena Inoue and John Baldwin, who slot in at No. 11.

Ice Dancing

Domnina and Shabalin hold a slim lead of about 120 points over second-ranked Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France, who did not compete at the 2009 World Figure Skating Championships. Davis and White experienced a breakout season in 2008-09, winning gold at the AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships and Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. They find themselves just ahead of European champions Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski of Russia. Italy's Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali rank fifth, while Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto are sixth. The No. 7 ranking of Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, medalists at each of the last two World Championships, speaks to the great depth in the discipline. Four other U.S. teams reside in the top 20: Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates (No. 10), Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein (No. 11), Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre (No. 16) and Madison Hubbell and Keiffer Hubbell (No. 19).
