Rippon jumps into top 10 in Icenetwork.com world rankings
US Figure Skating October 21, 2009
Colorado Springs, Colo. (Oct. 20, 2009) - Adam Rippon's bronze medal at Trophée Eric Bompard - his first of any color in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series - made him the biggest mover in this week's icenetwork.com World Figure Skater Rankings, vaulting him eight spots to No. 9.
Ladies
Korea's Yu-Na Kim widened her lead to more than 1,500 points over second-ranked Mao Asada of Japan with her convincing victory in Paris. Kim beat Asada by more than 36 points and set a new scoring record in the process, amassing a competition mark of 210.03. Trophée Bompard bronze medalist Yukari Nakano of Japan moved up two spots to No. 6, while fourth-place finisher Caroline Zhang of the United States also improved two spots, to No. 8.
Men
Top-ranked Patrick Chan of Canada announced he will miss this week's Rostelecom Cup, opening the door for second-ranked Brian Joubert to assume the top spot. The five-time World medalist stumbled in France, however, finishing fourth, and Chan maintained the top spot. Bompard gold medalist Nobunari Oda of Japan crept up three places to No. 6, while Czech Tomas Verner used his silver medal-finish in Paris to inch up two places to No. 4. After Rippon's eight-spot jump, the largest climb of the week belonged to Russian Sergei Voronov, who placed sixth at Bompard but sits five spots higher than last week at No. 10.
Pairs
The surprise of the competition came in pairs, where reigning two-time World champions Germans Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy suffered a meltdown in the free skate and finished third. They maintained their sizable lead in the standings, however. The biggest beneficiaries of the Germans' calamitous performance were Russians Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov, who won their first Grand Prix gold medal, an achievement that bumped them up two spots to No. 4. Rena Inoue and John Baldwin of the United States had a respectable fourth-place showing - landing a clean throw triple Axel in the process - and ascended four positions to No. 10.
Ice Dancing
Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the ice dancing event easily, boosting them four places to No. 3. No other dance team's standing changed more than two spots, although the Russian teams of Ekaterina Rubleva and Ivan Shefer, and Kristina Gorshkova and Vitali Butikov moved into the rankings at Nos. 18 and 19, respectively, after sitting just outside the top 20 last week.
